FAQs

General Questions:FAQ

What is the difference between FTP Worldwide and free cloud storage services like iCloud and SkyDrive?

FTP Worldwide is built for business. Our plans are designed to allow multiple users to send and receive data in a secure and reliable manner. Cloud storage services such as iCloud, SkyDrive, Google Drive, etc., are more fitting for syncing various devices for a single user. Many of these services do not meet the stringent security guidelines for privacy and HIPAA compliance. The FTP Worldwide system is ideal for companies and organizations that need to transfer large files and/or large amounts of data to and from colleagues, clients and customers.

What is basic FTP Security?

GENERAL SECURITY
FTP User names and passwords are required for all access to our FTP servers, do not accept anonymous FTP

  • All our servers are located in data centers that are secured and maintained by 24/7 support staff.
  • All our FTP servers are protected by the latest state of the art firewalls, intrusion and brute force protection.
  • All of our FTP Servers run on Linux operating systems for maximum stability and intrusion protection.

SECURE FTP
File transfers can be secured using several methods or communication protocols. The most common methods are HTTPS, SFTP and FTPS.

HTTPS
Our FREE web-based (Java) FTP client allows secure/encrypted file transfers via HTTPS. HTTPS is the same protocol used by most online banking and other secure web applications. The advantage is no software to download, install and configure. This a great option for most users. However, some may require scripted or automatic file transfers that can be achieved with 3rd party FTP clients such as FileZilla.

SFTP
SFTP (Simple File Transfer Protocol) allows users to use the FTP protocol in a secure shell (SSH). This protocol uses port 22 (instead of Port 21) with 128-bit encryption. SFTP can only be used with admin IDs.

FTPS
FTPS simply put is FTP over SSL. FTP Worldwide utilizies a secure wrapper which is similar to an SSL certification The wrapper allows external FTP applications, such as Cute FTP, to transfer data between the remote PC and FTP server using SSL secure protocol over the internet. This is comparable to using HTTPS on your FTP site. For FTP over Implicit SSL/TLS encryption PORT 990 will be used. For FTP over Explicit SSL/TLS encryption PORT 24 will be used.

The FTPS Wrapper must be used with Virtual FTP IDs.

Login setup information: (implicit)

Hostname: logical server name
UserID: virtualID
Port: 990
Mode: Passive (PSV)
Server Type: FTP over implicit TLS/SSL protocol

Login setup information: (explicit)

Hostname: domain name or dedicated ip
UserID: virtualID
Port: 24
Mode: Passive (PSV)
Server Type: FTP over explicit TLS/SSL protocol

There is a one-time charge of $200.00* for the account installation (5 consecutive connections) or $350.00* for unlimited connections. This option is only available with Premium accounts.

Do I need a Secure (encrypted) FTP site?

All FTP Worldwide FTP sites are secure. All users are required to have a login name and password to gain access to any of our FTP sites and all our servers are behind firewalls with the latest intrusion and brute force protections.

A Secure FTP site, however, goes one step further and protects the files while they are being transferred across the internet. While the files are being transferred, they are encrypted so that even if a hacker somehow intercepted them, they are not readable.

Who typically uses or requires a Secure FTP site?

  • Businesses transferring credit card information.
  • Financial institutions.
  • Anyone transferring personal records or any type of personal information.
  • Businesses transferring or transcribing Medical records. See HIPAA compliant information.
  • Public or private institution handling classified information.
  • Anyone with sensitive copyright or patented information.
  • Companies who need to protect their designs or other types of sensitive or timely information.

Most businesses do not require a Secure FTP site unless it is required by law or corporate policy.

What does "File Capacity" mean in your plans on the web site?
